John Battelle:Twitter?
We integrate livestreams and we do see real time information as part of our future. i am a big fan of Twitter and we could leverage it with our platform.
John: Bing?
They did quite a good job with Bing and I was surprised with the level of traction they got.
Now we are not making fear decision anymore (i e when we feared that Yahoo could be acquired by Microsoft)
Tim Armstrong: We are building a broader new platform with integrated content but i cannot tell you more about it.
AOL is a very profitable and produce a lot of cash. We are very focused to grow a large content platform.
Is AOL ready to be separated from Tine Warner?
Tim:We set the company strategy, and we are working on the cost structure and the last piece on preparing the company to go public is working on the investors relations. i think that we have in a good position.
Why did you take the job at AOL?
Tim: I thought that AOL was under valued and Google was an incredible experience but I wanted to learn and on this new job at AOL I learned a lot in a few months.
Brin: We have this legal dispute with authors and publishers that we settled, and we need a way to give access to these books to the public and pay the people who created them. I am confident that we will be succesful in the lnog run.
It is not quite stable yet, and frankly it is one of the dispointment for me on this project, I would have been happier if we would have launched the 2 versions simultaneously but it is not even in beta stage right now.
Yahoo had a number of interesting innovation on their own for search and they may have been better to continue in this direction, but i am not the one to judge here.
I use all kinds of search engine out there. Bing has a lot of interesting features.
Brin: We have entered areas where we have problems, like email for example. If you look at Android, there are all kinds of flaws. We worked pretty close with HTC for the Android devices. You cannot create software completely disconnected from hardware.
Brin: On a high level i think that internet is an efficient advertising platform and more efficient than the traditional model
I do not think that people spend all their attention in the search box. When we started the search inventory was the cheapest business and it took us a number of years to make it a lucrative business and reverse de business model with Adsense.
Did you try to buy Twitter?
Brin: I did not try to buy Twitter
Brinn: It is very exciting to see an entrepreneur to be successful twice.
How that twitter go down?
Are you worried about the amount of the national debt?
If you asked people in 1929 how much they would have borowed to avoid the crisis the answer is of course they would have done it.
The main reason of the deficit from the past 10 years is the state of the economy and it increased because now we are in the worse conomic crisis . The R&D tax credit will be permanent, natural disaster is renewed every year so we made permanent expenses that were paid anyway.
Question How do you plan to reduce costs?
The most efficient way to reduce cost is competition but for health insurance they are going to exclude more and more people from the system to be more competitive and as a society we have to prevent this kind of competition.
Recovery: AOL beats their earning,is it a sign of rebound?
We are still in a tough spot even if it is way better than in January. But we are minus 6 percent on the GDP which is historically very bad.
Tim O'Reilly: The space program is great exemple of big dreams become reality.
What is the big dream today?
T. O.: Do we have the level of mathematial literacy to figure out the economics?
The president put a big effort on education because science, mathematics and foreign languages are the area where we have to make efforts.
It is a fact that majority of exports is in manufacturing.Technology services, you could see that as one of the key area for exports.
A. G. 18 billion dollars went to R&D that pretty significant.it is the biggest expansion in research in the US governement ever.
We have to grow into something. The good news is that Silicon Valley is not a big debt driven industry.
Tim O.: what would have you done differently?
Austan Golsbee: I would have packed more food in my desk and have had a matress under my desk.
Things like provisions that give assistance to low income people for example. If we had more time we would have put more money in the tax relieve project. For example in California: they have to cut services and raises taxes to balance the budget.
Is Barak a socialist?
He is not a socialist he is a market oriented president.
